“working with you changed how I see life and acting in general”

When William Trotter came to work with Karim on Le Mariage, one of the workshops he had been developing at the Actors Centre was titled Vocal Truth for Stage and Screen. As Karim returned to stage work after a long interval, William was able to help him find vocal presence for stage work in a way that increased, rather than sacrificed, truth. The production was staged in Studio Two at the Arcola – a small space, but of course it’s surprisingly easy to be inaudible in a studio space – you relax too much and lose the precise focus of the space.

Moving from stage to screen can also be tricky: the lower vocal levels can betray you into thinking speech unimportant, whereas …

what is all-important, whatever the medium, is that the inner life of the character is heard in the voice.
